Transport

Situated just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre, The University of Queensland (UQ) is home to historic sandstone buildings, contemporary architecture as well as picturesque gardens and lakes.

The campus is well served by multiple transport options as listed below:

Airport – Brisbane International and Domestic Airports

Taxi or rideshare

  • A taxi from Brisbane Airport to UQ Chancellor’s Place (St Lucia Campus) will cost approximately $75. Uber or Didi will cost approximately $50.
  • At UQ, taxi ranks can be found at Chancellor’s Place (near the bus stop) and University Drive (in front of the Morgan Smith Building)

Parking on Campuspaid parking on campus is available but limited

Public Transport options

  • Train – The Airtrain connects Brisbane’s International and Domestic Airports to the city, with stops at Central, Roma Street, and South Brisbane stations. From there, you need to take a connecting bus to reach the University. Fares are $22.30, payable via contactless bank card or go card.
  • Bus – UQ St Lucia campus has two bus stops: Chancellor’s Place and UQ Lakes. Both have regular bus routes to the city.
  • Ferry ‘City Cat’ – St Lucia terminal located adjacent to the QU lakes and Eleanor Schonell Bridge

NOTE: A Go Card is required to access public transport. These can be purchased on arrival at Brisbane Airport or at convenience stores or top up machines at busways/train stations around Brisbane. Bus and City Cat fares are a flat 50 cents on all Translink buses, trains, trams and ferries across South East Queensland. Separate fares apply when taking the train to or from Brisbane Airport.As public transport timetables and routes can change, we suggest you visit the Translink Website to plan your journey.

Accommodation

On-campus options

On campus college accommodation is not available for independent booking. However you may book Airbnb on properties in St Lucia (on-campus), or in nearby suburbs with convenient bus connections including Toowong, Indooroopilly, West End and South Brisbane.

Off-campus options

Several independent hotels and motels are located in St Lucia’s neighbouring suburbs and are only a short bus or ferry ride to campus. Pleas see the list below for some suggested accommodation options close to UQ. Use the Translink website to check travel times from each location.

Alternatively, we suggest booking through accommodation booking websites such as Airbnb or Booking.com

Travel Grants

Travel grants are available to assist:

  • Students enrolled at AMSI Member Universities, and 
  • Students and early-career researchers (PhD completion in 2023 or later) from South East Asia and the Pacific Islands

These grants help offset travel and accommodation costs for in-person participants.

Female, First Nations and regional, rural and remote students are encouraged to apply.

AMSI Travel Grant Recipient Accommodation

A limited number of rooms have been booked at The Women’s College to be offered to AMSI Travel Grants recipients. These rooms will be booked and paid for on behalf of recipients for up to 12 nights.

Women’s College is a student residential college situated within The University of Queensland. Cafes and supermarkets are also located both on campus and nearby.

Each room is furnished with a single bed, a desk, access to free Wi-Fi and shared bathroom facilities. The building is also equipped with 24 hour security.

Eduroam is available on campus. There is also free public wifi for UQ conference attendees, see UQ Guest wifi.

Coffee and food options

  • Wordsmiths Cafe, outside building 4, staff house road. Serves breakfast, lunch and coffee.
  • Merlo Coffee (Duhig tower, building 2)
  • Patina Alumni Court (licensed), premium dining option.
  • Phizz food court (building 63) – Outlets include Guzman y Gomez, Subway, Oriental Corner, Marketcart, Boost Juice, Kenko Sushi
  • Main refectory (Union building 21) – Options include Kenko Sushi, Main Course, On a Roll Bakery, Boost Juice, Redroom
  • Biological Sciences Library (building 94) – Darwin’s (licensed), Pizza Caffe, Bagel Boys
  • Lakeside Cafe (licensed), outside Advanced Engineering (Building 49) overlooking the UQ lakes, offers Vietnamese cuisine and breakfast options. Open until about 2pm.
  • Saint Lucy Caffe e Cucina (licensed) at the UQ Tennis Centre. Open for lunches and dinners in the week.
  • Ezy Mart (sandwiches, pies, snacks)
